Here are the essential requirements for giving blood at the PNST. If in doubt, come and meet us.
Basic requirements

Age : 17 to 65
Blood donation is open to anyone aged at least 17 and no more than 65.

Minimum weight: 50 kg (110 lbs)
To protect your health, the volume collected is proportional to your body weight.

Stable blood pressure
Your blood pressure must be stable at the time of donation. It is checked before the collection.

Sufficient hemoglobin level
Your hemoglobin level must be 12 g/dl or higher. It is checked with a quick, painless test before donation.

Responsible, low-risk sexual behavior
Responsible, low-risk sexual behavior is a condition of eligibility for blood donation.

Donation frequency
4 times a year
Minimum interval: 12 weeks
3 times a year
Minimum interval: 16 weeks
These intervals allow your body to fully rebuild its red blood cell and iron reserves.

Some common contraindications
If in doubt, come and meet us: the medical team is there to guide you confidentially.
- A positive test result for HIV, hepatitis B or C, or syphilis.
- A tattoo or piercing within the last 4 months.
- Pregnancy or childbirth within the last 6 months.
- A fever or an active infection at the time of donation.
- Injection drug use, at any point in time.

Before your donation: some practical tips
Rest the day before
A good night’s rest before donating makes for a comfortable experience and a quicker recovery.
Eat beforehand
Do not come on an empty stomach. Make sure you have eaten before coming in for your donation.
Feel well
Only come in if you feel physically fit and in good health at the time of donation.
Drink plenty of fluids
Stay well hydrated in the 24 to 48 hours before your donation.
